The Blessing You Didn't Recognise - Part 2
Jul 03, 2025This is Part 2, so if you haven't read Part 1, go back and do that!
Blessing equals happy occurrence... or does it?
How often have you seen someone have something really good happen to them and they go 'yes, I'm really blessed' ...
Fair warning, where we're about to go with this idea is likely to cause some grumbles so 'brace, brace' and all that.
It is easy to equate blessing with the favourable outcome we're delighted happened. That's not an unfair use of the word either, of course you feel 'blessed' when good things happen. When you weren't expecting them, those nice outcomes can feel all the sweeter.
However.
If we only equate 'blessing' with the outcome in the moment that we wanted, then we're not going to recognise that sometimes the 'blessing' is in NOT getting what you wanted... e.g. ever had a boyfriend that you were head over heels for and would gladly have married, but now you look back and realise that the heartbreaking break up you went through was a 'blessing in disguise' because now you can see how that relationship would not have worked well for you longer term...
Sometimes the blessing is in not getting what you wanted in the TIMING you'd have chosen... Forgive the dramatic example, but a friend of mine missed her train to the airport years back and consequently missed a flight which ended in disaster.
Sometimes the blessing is in the form of a permanently closed down opportunity which opens you to other opportunities or experiences that you'd have missed out on otherwise.
Wilderness seasons
A very personal example for me is the one I've been going through over the past couple of years. At the same time as I've had incredible opportunities, and clients have been getting more extraordinary results than ever before, it has also been a really trying time. To speak to it from my faith perspective, I knew God was stripping a lot back from me to do deep inner work in me that I need for this next season.
I have cried a lot through it and my *mind* has often wanted to rail against it, fight this season and get back to doing more of this work that I love. At the same time, when I quietened the noise of my mind and listened to my *spirit*, it has been at complete peace throughout. I have known that I am in a place of rebuilding and that this sense of being in the wilderness is a massive blessing. It is pruning, healing, rewiring, rejuvenating and so much more besides. It's a blessing of protection, Divine provision and preparation. It might look - and at times feel - rough, but when you look beyond the immediate and see who you're being honed to become through this season, you can learn to recognise the unbridled blessing in letting your Creator do some upgrades!
Blessings can be the immediate joy-filled delights we tend to think of them as, but let's never lose sight that there can be many blessings even in the hard seasons, perhaps especially in the hard seasons.
If you're in one of those seasons, take heart dear one. Press in, do the work and get excited for what's on the other side of it. You are beloved and none of this need be wasted.
